Both burn, and any open flame adds a little particulate matter to a room. What is paraffin wax, and what is soy wax?
The clearest place to start is where each wax comes from.
Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum. When crude oil is refined into fuels such as gasoline and kerosene, a waxy fraction is separated out, then cleaned and solidified into the familiar candle wax. It has been the industry standard for more than a century because it is inexpensive, holds a large amount of fragrance and throws scent strongly. None of that makes it dangerous. It simply means paraffin is a refined fossil material rather than a plant one.
Soy wax is made by taking soybean oil and hydrogenating it, a process that turns the liquid oil into a soft solid that holds its shape at room temperature. Because it comes from a crop rather than a barrel of oil, it is renewable and biodegradable, and it tends to burn at a lower temperature than paraffin. That lower burn temperature is the reason soy candles usually burn more slowly and last longer for a given size, and it is part of why a well made soy candle tends to leave less visible residue on the glass.

Do soy candles really burn cleaner? What the research actually says
This is the question the internet argues about most, usually with more heat than light, so it is worth being precise.
Every candle, regardless of wax, produces some emissions when it burns. The United States Environmental Protection Agency lists burning candles among ordinary indoor sources of fine particulate matter, alongside cooking and fireplaces, and its guidance is simply to ventilate the space while you burn them. No open flame is emission free, and no honest brand should claim otherwise.
What the better research shows is that the wax category is not the main thing deciding how clean a candle burns. When candles are well made and burned correctly, independent laboratory testing has found the particulate output of paraffin, soy and other common waxes to be broadly similar. A poorly wicked soy candle that gutters and smokes can be dirtier than a properly made paraffin one. In other words, the wick, the fragrance load and the way you burn the candle matter as much as the wax poured into the glass.
Where soy does hold a genuine, defensible edge is threefold. It is renewable and biodegradable rather than fossil derived, which is an environmental point rather than a health one. It burns cooler and slower, which tends to mean a longer life and less soot on the vessel. And a soy formula avoids the petroleum base entirely, which many people simply prefer to keep out of their home. You will also see dramatic claims online that paraffin releases specific toxins such as benzene. Those claims trace back to a single unpublished study that the wider scientific community never validated, so a careful brand does not lean on them. The four things that actually decide a candle's quality

The wax
Start with what you already know. A plant wax such as soy is renewable, biodegradable and cooler burning, while paraffin is a refined petroleum material. Look for a candle that names its wax plainly. Vagueness here, or a blended wax that hides its paraffin content behind the word "soy blend," is the first thing worth questioning.
The wick
The wick is the part most people never think about, and historically it was the real hazard. Older candles sometimes used a lead core to keep the wick upright, which could raise indoor lead levels, which is exactly why regulators banned lead core wicks in the United States in 2003. A quality candle today uses a clean, lead free wick, usually cotton, sized correctly to the vessel so the flame stays small and steady rather than tall and flickering. The fragrance
Scent is where cheap candles cut corners. The things to look for are a fragrance that is phthalate free and the absence of synthetic dyes, both of which reduce what the flame has to break down. Whether a candle is scented with essential oils or with fine fragrance, the fragrance should meet recognised safety standards rather than simply smelling strong. A candle that is transparent about its fragrance is telling you something about the rest of it too.
The make
Finally, how and where a candle is made. Small, controlled production, honest ingredient disclosure and a clear point of view on sustainability tend to travel together. A brand willing to tell you what is in the glass, and what is deliberately left out, has usually earned the benefit of the doubt.
Why this matters a little more in a UAE home
There is a local reason to care about all of this. For much of the year, homes across Dubai and the wider UAE are sealed and climate controlled, with the same air recirculating through the AC rather than being exchanged with the outdoors. How to burn any candle well
Good technique closes most of the gap between a clean burn and a smoky one, whatever the wax.
Let the first burn form a full melt pool. On the first lighting, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the glass before you put it out, which usually takes a couple of hours. This prevents tunnelling and sets the candle up to burn evenly for its whole life. Trim the wick to about five millimetres before every burn, so the flame stays low and controlled.
