Olive oil is one of the most effective natural emollients for dry skin. It is rich in oleic acid, squalene and antioxidant polyphenols, which together soften the skin, slow water loss and leave a protective film on the surface. It works best on normal to dry skin as a body treatment, and it is at its most reliable when it is blended into a balanced formula rather than used straight from the bottle.
That last point is where most olive oil advice goes quiet, so this guide stays honest about both sides. Olive oil is Caeli's hero ingredient, chosen for real reasons, and the clearest way to show why it earns that place is to explain exactly what it does, who it suits, and where a thoughtful formulation does a better job than the oil on its own.
What olive oil is actually made of
The behaviour of any plant oil on skin comes down to its fatty acid profile, and olive oil has a distinctive one. It is dominated by oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that typically makes up somewhere between 55 and 83 percent of the oil, with a much smaller share of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid.
Oleic acid is what gives olive oil its rich, cushioning feel. It sits on the surface, forms a soft occlusive layer and helps the skin hold on to moisture, which is why olive-rich oils feel more nourishing and less "dry" than light, fast-absorbing oils. Alongside the fatty acids, virgin olive oil carries two ingredients that matter for skin: squalene, a lipid the skin already produces as part of its own sebum, and polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol, which are antioxidants that help defend against the oxidative stress that drives visible ageing.
Caeli uses organic virgin olive oil sourced from Tunisia, where the founder grew up, chosen for its purity rather than its price. Virgin, cold-pressed oil keeps those beneficial lipids and antioxidants intact, because it is extracted without the heat and solvents that strip them out of refined oil.
The real benefits of olive oil for skin
It is a genuine emollient and moisture-sealer. On dry skin, olive oil softens rough texture quickly and reduces the amount of water that evaporates from the surface. If your skin feels tight after a shower, an olive-oil-based product helps it feel comfortable again within minutes, which is exactly the job a body moisturiser is supposed to do.
It carries antioxidants. The polyphenols in virgin olive oil have measurable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. On skin that is constantly exposed to environmental stress, that is a meaningful supporting benefit, even if it is not a dramatic one.
It replenishes a lipid the skin recognises. Squalene is already part of your skin's natural oil. Topping it up with an oil that contains it is a gentle way to support the surface rather than fight it.
It suits dry and normal skin on the body especially well. The body is where olive oil shines. The skin on your arms, legs and torso is generally less reactive than facial skin, and it benefits from exactly the kind of rich, occlusive care that an oleic oil provides. This is the single most reliable use case, and it is why Caeli builds its body care around olive oil rather than its face care.
The honest limits, because they matter
Good ingredient education means saying where something does not fit, and olive oil has two clear boundaries.
First, it is not the best choice for a seriously damaged or atopic skin barrier. Research has shown that pure olive oil, applied repeatedly to a compromised barrier, can slow its recovery because of that high oleic acid content. A widely cited controlled study found that undiluted olive oil applied twice daily for several weeks reduced the integrity of the outer skin layer in adult volunteers, while a linoleic-rich oil did not. If you have eczema or a badly broken barrier, raw olive oil is not the answer.
Second, it is not ideal for oil-prone or acne-prone facial skin. Oleic-rich oils feel heavy on the face and do not suit everyone, which is another reason olive oil belongs in body care rather than a facial routine for most people.
None of this undermines the ingredient. It simply explains why raw kitchen olive oil and a well-made olive-oil product are not the same thing. A formula lets you keep the comfort and antioxidants of olive oil while balancing it with other ingredients that support the barrier, adjusting the texture so it absorbs well and stays stable. That is the difference between a cooking ingredient and a skincare one.
Why this makes sense for skin in Dubai
Skin in the UAE loses moisture fast. Indoors, air conditioning runs for most of the year and pulls humidity out of the air, so the environment is constantly drawing water out of your skin. Outdoors, the heat and an extreme UV index add their own stress. The result is a climate that leaves body skin feeling tight, flaky and rough far more often than a temperate one would. (We explain the full mechanism in our guide to why your skin is so dry in Dubai.)
In that setting, a rich, occlusive emollient is not a luxury, it is the right tool. Olive oil's ability to seal moisture into the skin is exactly what a dehumidified, air-conditioned environment calls for, which is why an olive-oil body product tends to outperform a light, watery lotion here.
How Caeli uses olive oil
Organic virgin olive oil sits at the heart of the Kelibia Organic Body Lotion, Caeli's body moisturiser. Rather than relying on olive oil alone, the lotion blends it into a balanced formula so you get the nourishment and the antioxidants without the drawbacks of raw oil: it absorbs cleanly, it stays stable, and it is designed to be comfortable on normal to dry skin every day.
The same philosophy runs through the wider body care collection and the hand care range, where olive oil works alongside other Mediterranean ingredients such as organic argan oil. If you want to understand argan oil's complementary role, our article on argan oil for dry skin covers it in depth.
Every Caeli formula is made in Europe, with naturally derived ingredients making up the large majority of each product, and a small, carefully tested share of lab-made ingredients included only to keep the formula safe and stable. That is the practical version of ingredient integrity: the right oil, treated the right way, in a product built to actually work on your skin.
